New Zealand Shipping Co

The New Zealand Shipping Company was another company in the P&O group, and had some beautiful ships as shown below.

Rangitata

Rangitata and Rangitiki were both built in 1929 by John Brown and Co, Clydebank. They were 552 feet long with a beam of 79 feet and a draught of 33 feet 8 inches. Their service speed was 16 knots. Rangitata carried 123 First and 288 Tourist Class Passengers, Rangitiki 121 First and 284 Tourist. They were scrapped in the mid 1960s.

There were two ships in this class, Rangitoto built 1949 at Barrow by Vickers Armstrong, and Rangitane, illustrated here, built in 1949 by John Brown and Co, Clydebank. Both were 609 feet long with a beam of 81 feet and a draught of 32 feet 1 inch. Rangitani had a gross tonnage of 21,867 and Rangitoto 21, 809.They had a service speed of 17 knots and carried 416 one class passengers.

Ruahine

Ruahine was built in 1951 by John Brown and Co, Clydebank. She was 584 feet long with a beam of 75 feet, a gross tonnage of 17,851 and a draught of 29 feet 7 inches. Her service speed was 17 knots and she carried 267 one class passengers.

In 1970, according to the then latest edition of Passenger Liners, these ships were no longer on the UK to New Zealand run. The "Australian" newspaper in October 1970 printed an announcement by P and O that New Zealand Shipping Company Limited would change its name to P and O New Zealand and as such all P and O affairs in that country would be handled by the new company, in the meantime the ships were sold off.
